The Battle of Britain
A Campaign Summary detailing the world’s first operational use of an integrated Air Defense System.
From what we can determine, we have developed the only available information graphic that presents daily operational sortie data for the Battle of Britain. Most other products focus on attrition. This graphic illustrates operational subject.
Through extensive research, we created a database for the daily Royal Air Force and Luftwaffe sorties during the battle. Overall this data enables viewers to gain a sense of the battle’s operational tempo.
The daily sortie data contains:
1. RAF Fighter Command Patrols and Intercepts,
2. Luftwaffe Bomber raids (including fighter escorts),
3. Not included are the Luftwaffe independent fighter sweeps, as the RAF deliberately ignored them to conserve their fighter strength.
3. RAF Bomber Command Sorties, which details RAF offensive air operations.
The campaign and geographic data includes:
1. German expeditionary air bases used during the battle,
2. German army deployments to support invasion planning to include embarkation ports,
3. The location of the intended landing beaches on the English Coast,
4. The German operational timeline for Operation Sealion, synchronized with the sortie data timeline to emphasize the time sensitive nature of the Luftwaffe’s operational and tactical tasks, and
5. Operation Sealion’s requirements for transporting the German Army across the English Channel, and associated ground force deployment data.
Together, this information contradicts the recent revisionist assessment that Hitler never truly intended to invade Great Britain. On the contrary, the deployment and operational planning data clearly indicates that the threat of invasion was very, very real and distinctly possible. This battle truly was Great Britain’s finest hour.
Additionally, this graphic illustrates the first use of a radar based integrated air defense system (IADS). Which in turn, illustrates the Luftwaffe’s intelligence failures throughout the battle.
The Battle of Britain remains a very relevant historical subject. For instance, information about the IADS battle was available to the United States Army and Navy, but none of those lessons were implemented at Pearl Harbor. Why not? The current conflict in Ukraine is an IADS campaign, with distinct similarities to the Battle of Britain. This is excellent professional development syllabus subject matter.
Data is derived from after action reports and primary sources.
